"GREEN" METAL
ROOFING |
|
Throughout
history, roofing has been dictated by the materials readily
available, but since biblical times, metal roofing has been the
preferred choice for monumental structures because of its beauty,
sustainability, and superior protection it offers. King Solomon's
Temple (970 B.C.), Notre Dame Cathedral (12th century), and
Monticello were all constructed with metal roofs.

WHY METAL ROOFING IS
"GREEN" |
|

 |
Sustainability
Metal
roofing’s durability can virtually eliminate the need to use future
raw materials to produce roofing. There are many handmade metal
roofs still in existence that date back to the 1800s. In addition,
metal roofing is known for its ability to hold up against other
weather forces—including windstorms, hail, ice, and snow. No other
roofing material has greater ability to withstand a wider range of
weather conditions. Stone Coated Steel products such as those
manufactured by
Decra and Gerard
are classified as “Class 4 Hail Resistant.” This means they
withstood laboratory tests using a 2” steel ball to simulate hail
conditions. Did you know that most insurance companies are offering
up to a 34% discount on your homeowner’s insurance premiums each
year for installing a “Class 4 Hail Resistant” roof on your house?
A “Class 4 Metal Roof” to you means lower insurance premiums, fewer
insurance claims, no out of pocket deductibles, less inconveniences,
and ultimately less of an impact on our environment and our
landfills. Check out this
information from State Farm for qualifying products and states
that offer discounts.
Recycled
Content
As consumers,
many of us are careful to collect our recyclable materials and turn
them in for collection. In reality, though, we are offered very few
consumer products through which we can “close the loop” by
purchasing products that are high in recycled content. Metal
roofing, however, offers that option to consumers by allowing them
to choose a significant building product on the basis of its
recycled content. Most metal roofs have recycled content ranging
from 25% to 95%.
Low Weight
Depending on
the product chosen, metal roofing has a weight that is from 1/3 to
as little as 1/8 the weight of conventional roofing shingles! This
means that in re-roofing applications, many metal roofs can be
installed over the old roofing material. This prevents the need to
remove the old roof and fill up valuable landfill space. Each year,
about 20 billion pounds of old composition roofing shingles are
dumped into U.S. landfills.
Recyclability
While metal
roofing is known for its extremely long life, it does have the added
benefit of being 100% recyclable if it is ever removed in the
future, perhaps as part of a building renovation. Whereas other old
roofing materials are disposed of by the ton each year in landfills
across the country, the steel, aluminum, and copper used in metal
roofing can be recycled in their entirety—even becoming,
potentially, another metal roof.
Energy
Efficiency
Metal roofing
is rapidly gaining acceptance as a very energy-efficient material.
Property owners have reported energy savings of as high as 20% and
even more after installing metal roofing. Pre-painted metal roofing
can display solar reflectance of at least 65% and thermal emittance
of 80%. This can have a tremendous impact on energy usage by
reducing air conditioning costs and the smog and pollution that are
created by the production of that energy. Many available metal
roofs are now being documented to meet Energy Star requirements
which can lead to tax savings for you. See below for some examples. |

"COOL" METAL
ROOFS |
|

While all
metal roofs are superior to composition roofs (asphalt shingles) in
reflectivity and emissivity (heat gain), only a few qualify as
Energy Star®. The 2009 Stimulus Package provides substantial tax
credits to homeowners who make energy efficient updates to their
home. One of the best ways to qualify for the credit is
installation of a painted or coated Energy Star® labeled metal roof.
Homeowners installing qualified roofs in 2009 and 2010 may be
eligible for a tax credit worth up to 30% of the materials cost
(materials only) up to $1,500 per home.
Cool metal
roofing not only looks great and lasts for decades; it has been
shown to save up to 40% on energy costs, depending on your regional
climate.
How to receive
the tax credit:
-
Confirm
that the metal roof you select is a painted or coated Energy
Star-labeled metal roof and obtain certification from Vertical
Roofing or the manufacturer.
-
Have the
metal roof installed between January 1, 2009 and December 31,
2010.
-
Fill out
IRS Form 5965 when filing your taxes for 2009 and/or 2010.
